INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL NETWORKING ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCES OF YEAR ONE STUDENTS OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY/LIBRARY INFORMATION SCIENCE

Abstract

The study was designed to examine the influence of social media on  the academic performance of year one students of educational technology and library science department. The research used the survey research method while formulating a good structural questionnaire as a sources of gathering primary data. Ten copies of questionnaire were used and ten were returned and used for analysis. The sample size was determined at ten using random sampling techniques. The findings revealed that some students who spend much time socializing on the internet perform well, some average and some below average. The objective at the study is to determine whether social networking really influences the academic performances of year one students of educational technology and library science.

Chapter One

1.1     Introduction

          Social networking is a social structure made up of individuals or organizations called nodes which are connected by one or more specific type of interdependency such as friendship, kinship, common interest, and financial exchange, exchange of beliefs, knowledge and prestige.

          The expansion ion technology has also affected internet software, thus leading to chatting; sites known by the name “social media”, with social networking sites, one can send and receive messages online. However lack of regulations of the internet has led to its excessive usage.   

          Children’s semi-structured home learning environment transitions into a more structured learning environment when children start first grade. Early academic performance enhances later academic performance.

          Parent’s academic socialization is a term describing the way parents influence student academic performance by shaping students skill, behavior and attitude toward school. Parent influence students through the environment and discourse parents have with their children. Highly educated parents tend to have more situation learning environment, children’s find few years of life are crucial to the development of language and social skills. There are students related that significantly contributed to their academic performance.

1.2     Statement of the Problem

          Scholars believe that individual academic performance are linked to difference in intelligence and personality. They also believe that students with higher mental ability as demonstrated by IQ tests and those who are higher in consciousness linked to effort and achievement motivation to achieve higher in academic settings.

          It is not obvious whether the environment precipitates the academic performance, therefore this study seeks to ascertain the motivating forces behind academic performance of year one students of the department of geography and natural resources management in University of Uyo.

1.3     Scope and Limitation of the Study

          This research is woven around” How social networking Influences academic performance of students”. The study is only limited to year one students of geography department, University of Uyo, Uyo. The data of the study are gotten through the primary source “questionnaire”.

1.4     Objectives of the Study

          The following are the objectives of the study;

  1. To find out the influence of social networking on academic performance of students.
  2. To determine the extents to which social networking has influence their result.
  3. To check whether the environment affects the performance of some students.

1.5     Research Question /Hypothesis

  1. Does social networking has any impacts on the student results?
  2. To what extent has it impacts or influence students performance?
  3. Does environment also contribute to student performance?

Ho:     There is no significant relationship between social networking and academic performance of year one students of Geography and Natural Resource Management.

Hi:     There is significant relationship between social networking and academic performance of year one students of Geography and Natural Resource Management.

1.6     Significance of the Study

          The study attempts to bring into focus study strategies in the preference of some students. It will also be importance to point out to student, where they belong to, intelligence or personality?.

          For successful academic performance, student needs to understand where he or she belong to and work toward that to enhance his or her performance.

          This project will obviously be of immense importance to future researchers on related discipline.

1.7     Definition of Terms Used

  • Academic Performance: Is the outcome of education-the extents to which a student as achieved their educational group.
  • Education: A process of training and instruction or teaching somebody about something.
  • Student: Student is a learner of someone who attend educational institution.
  • Effect: an outcome of something.
